Born in 1951 in Bombay, Shri Zakir Hussain Qureshi received his training in Tabla from his father Ustad Alla Rakha of the Punjab gharana. He rose to prominence while still very young, attaining proficiency in providing accompaniment to both vocal and instrumental music. Among our foremost Tabla players today, Shri Zakir Hussain has accompanied most of the leading musicians and dancers of the country. He has also been acclaimed as an outstanding soloist. His duets with other eminent players of the Tabla, Mridangam, and other percussion instruments-in India and abroad-have added a new dimension to Indian instru- mental music. Shri Zakir Hussain has performed widely and taught Tabla at various universi- ties and cultural institutions in the United States. He has a large number of gramophone records and cassettes to his credit. Shri Zakir Hussain received the Padma Shri in 1988 and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar in 1990. Shri Zakir Hussain receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
