Born on 22 May 1917 in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh, Shrimati Uzra Butt began her career as a dancer in Shri Uday Shankar’s ballet troupe and performed all over the country. She was a dance teacher before she joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association as an actress in 1944. Shrimati Butt was the leading lady at Prithvi Theatres, Bombay, till 1960 and gave about 2500 performances in 1200 towns and cities in India. She was also the Art Director of Prithvi Theatres. In 1964 Shrimati Uzra Butt migrated to Pakistan and formed her own dance group in Rawalpindi. She was also Director of the Dance and Drama Children’s Theatre, National Council of Arts, Islamabad, from 1970 to 1971. She has been the leading actress of Ajoka Theatre, Lahore, since 1984 and has acted in many plays staged by the company. Shrimati Uzra Butt receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Indian theatre as an actress.
