I present to you, Sir, Shri Kalyanam Raghuramaiah. Born in 1901, at Suddapalli, in Andhra Pradesh, Shri Raghuramaiah made his debut on the stage at the age of 8. His first appearance was as Raghu- rama in Bhakta Ramadas, and this was an immediate success, especially because of his singing. In his formative years, Shri Raghuramaiah drew inspiration from the work of Yadavalli Suryanarayana and Balagandharva. When Gurudev Tagore heard him sing he was so impressed that he called Shri Raghuramaiah ‘the nightingale of the Andhra stage’. Shri Raghuramaiah has acted in innumerable mythological, historical and social plays. He has also appeared in mytholo- gical roles in over a hundred films. He has to his credit over 40 discs, He has been honoured by several theatre and art organisations in the country. For his eminence in the field of Theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Kalyanam Raghuramaiah receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting.
