Sulabha Deshpande

Born in 1937 in Bombay Shrimati Sulabha Deshpande has been associated with the Marathi and Hindi stage for over three decades as an outstanding actress and director. Among many roles that received high acclaim she has played Miss Benare in Vijay Tendulkar’s Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe directed by her late husband Arvind Deshpande and Champa in Sakharam Binder which she herself directed. She has also played notable roles in a number of film and television productions. A recipient of various honours Shrimati Deshpande founded Awishkar — an experimental theatre group together with Arvind Deshpande. She has also made a significant contribution to children’s theatre, represent- ing India in several international forums. For her eminence in theatre and her contribution to its enrichment Shrimati Sulabha Deshpande receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for acting.
