Born in 1945 in Sangli, Maha- rashtra, Shrimati Bhakti Shafi Barve-Inamdar has been associated as an actress with leading theatre groups in Bombay including Theatre Unit, Indian National Theatre, and Rangayan. In an acting career of over 25 years, she has performed in some 2500 shows of various plays in Marathi, Hindi, and Gujarati. Some of her notable roles have been as Hansa in Ajab Nyaya Vartulacha, a Marathi adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle, Kinni in Shri Mohan Rakesh’s Adhe- Adhure, and Manjula in Shri P.L. Deshpande’s Tee Phularani, an adaptation of Bernard Shaw’s Pygmallion. She is currently featured in Shri P. L. Mayekar’s Resham Gaanth. Shrimati Bhakti Barve- Inamdar has also acted in films, playing a lead role in Jaane bhi Do Yaaron. On acting assign- ments and as a member of cultural delegations, she has travelled in Germany, the Soviet Union, and several Gulf states. Shrimati Bhakti Barve-Inamdar was on the staff of All India Radio and Doordarshan from 1967 to 1985 and has performed in 15 teleplays. Among other honours, she received the Shanta Apte Suvarna Padak in 1980 and 1986, the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parish ad Award in 1989, and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar in 1990. Shrimati Bhakti Barve- Inamdar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to theatre as an actress.
