I present to you, Madam, Sri Chintamani Govind Pendse. Sri Chintamani Govind Pendse, popularly known as Mama Pendse was born in August 1906. His major interest in life has been theatre and he joined Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali when he was only eighteen years old. He got his maiden assignment to act on the stage in 1928. Since then he has acted in more than 100 pro- ductions as a devoted and disciplined actor. He is so much committed to theatre that between 1945 and 1957 while he underwent five surgical opera- tions, he continued to act on stage under the banner of Natya Niketan. Notwithstanding the fact that he has been all through a professional actor he contribu- ted much to the experimental Marathi Theatre. He has also directed many plays. In 1944 Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh produced Bhaobandki in which he played the memorable role of ‘Nana Phadnavis’. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its enrichment Sri Chintamani Govind Pendse receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting for 1981.
