Born in 1950 in Bangalore, Shrimati B. Jayashree started acting on the stage at a very young age in her grandfather Gubbi Veeranna’s professional theatre company. Later she joined the National School of Drama, Delhi, and graduating in 1970. She has acted in a number of plays under the direction of Gubbi Veeranna, E. Alkazi, B.V. Karanth, Chintapalli Rama- chanra Rao and others. B. Jayashree established herself as a director with Lakshapati Raja Ne Kathe, a play acclaimed for its brilliant music and presentational style. Her other significant productions include Maxim Gorky’s Mother, Girish Karnad’s Hayavadana. Shanti Gandhi’s Jasma Oden, Chandrasekhar Kambar’s Karimayi, etc. She has participa- ted in International Experimental Theatre Workshops in Cairo and Tashkent and has recently attended a children’s theatre workshop in Edinburgh. She was honoured by the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi with the Safdar Hashmi Award in 1971 and received the Karnataka Nataka Akademi Award in 1996. Shrimati B. Jayashree receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Kannada theatre as a director.
