Born in 1915 in Bangalore, Smt. B. Jayamma began her stage career in the role of ‘Silent Seetha’ at the age of nine. Later Shri Gubbi Veeranna, the doyen of Kannada theatre, discovered her talents and soon she was playing lead roles in the famous Gubbi Drama Company. Her performances in plays like Sadarame, Gulebakavoli, Kurukshetra, Prahlada Charitre, Subhadra Kalyana and Prabhamani Vijaya were highly acclaimed. In 1931 she married Shri Gubbi Veeranna. She entered the cinema in the silent era, in 1930, and is celebrated for her role in Hemareddy Mallamma (1944). She also acted in Tamil and Telugu films. Smt. B. Jayamma took to social work after a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in 1947, and this has since been her foremost concern. She has received many State awards and honours, and is a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council. For her eminence in the field of Theatre and her contribution to its enrichment, Smt. B. Jayamma receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting for 1985.
