Fida Hussain

Shri Fida Hussain was born in 1899 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. At the age of nineteen he joined the Royal Dramatic Club of his native town and left soon after, in the same year, to join the famous New Alfred Drama Company of Bombay as a singer. Initially he played female roles but later became the chief male actor of the Company. He was groomed as an actor of the Company. He was groomed as an actor by playwright-director Radhey Shyam Kathawachak, and went on to play lead roles in some three hundred productions to great popular acclaim. Many of the plays he acted in — Veer Abhimanyu, Narsi Mehta, Chalta Purza and Parivartan — had runs exceeding a thousand shows each. Shri Fida Hussain joined the Moonlight Theatre Com- pany of Calcutta in 1948 and retired in 1967. A living document of Parsi Theatre, Shri Hussain has many awards and honours to his credit, including the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award confer- red in 1978. For his eminence in the field of Theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Fida Hussain receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting for 1985.
