Born in 1961 in Kamrup, Assam, Shrimati Seema Biswas graduated in theatre in 1984 from the National School of Drama, Delhi. Subsequently, she joined NSD’s Repertory Company and acted in lead roles in several productions of the Company. She has worked under eminent directors in over fifty plays, and has won acclaim for her performances in Karmawali, Qaid-e-Hayat, Nati Binodini, Khubsurat Bahu, Lehron ke Rajhans and Ashad ka ek Din. Apart from her contribution to the Hindi theatre, she has also worked in the mobile theatre of Assam with distinction, giving over three hundred shows. Seema Biswas has also gained critical attention and popular acclaim for her role in the film Bandit Queen, for which she was honoured with the National Award. Since then, she has acted in several films in various languages. Shrimati Seema Biswas receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contri- bution to Indian theatre as an actress.
