Kumari Uttara Baokar was born at Sangli in Maharashtra in 1944. She graduated, with specialisa- tion in acting, from the National School of Drama, New Delhi and joined its Repertory Company in 1968. Since then, she has blossomed into one of the foremost actresses of the Hindi stage. She has played the lead roles in over fifty plays, several of them under the direc- tion of internationally known theatre directors. Some of her memorable roles, besides several others, include Priyamvada in Abhigyana Shakuntalam, Jasma in Jasma Odan, Desdemona in Othello and Grusha in Caucasian Chalk Circle. Besides her achieve- ments in acting, she also directed a play, Sandhya Chhaya, in 1978. As a member of the National School of Drama Repertory, Km. Baokar participated in the Festival of India in the U.K. in 1982. For her eminence in the field of Theatre and her contribution to its enrichment, Km. Uttara Baokar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting for 1984.
