Jaswant D. Thaker



I present to you, Sir, Shri Jashwant Thaker. Born in 1915, Shri Jashwant Thaker was attracted to the theatre at a very young age. He began his regular theatrical career from the year I943, when he joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association. He soon became a pioneer of the new Gujarati theatre movement. He has during some 25 years, acted in and directed a large number of plays. Some of his major roles are Shahjahan in ‘Shahjahan’, Hamlet in ‘Hamlet’, Chanakya in ‘Mudrarakshas’ and Shivaji in ‘Raygarh Jyare Jage Chhe’. Shri Thaker has also been associated with dramatic training and he joined the Department of Drama, M.S. University, Baroda, in 1950. He is now working as the Head of the Department of Drama in the H. K. Arts College, Ahmedabad. He is associated with several Academic Boards and Educational institutions. Shri Thaker has also written on theatrical subjects and edited theatre journals. He edited in 1947-49 a fortnightly Gujarati magazine, Natak. He has written poems and translated and adapted English plays into Gujarati. His books on theatre in Gujarati include Natya Shikshan na mool Tatvo and Natya Prayog Shilpa. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its development, Shri Jashwant Thaker receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting.
