Kumar Roy

Born in Dinapur in 1926, Shri Kumar Roy is a disciple of Shri Sombhu Mitra. He has acted in most of the major productions of Shri Sombhu Mitra during the last three decades. Besides his excellence in acting, he is known for set and costume designing and for playwriting. Presently teaching drama in Rabindra Bharati University in Calcutta, he is also the President of Bohu- rupee, the well-known theatre group of Bengal. He is known for his roles in Raktakarabi, Raja, Putul Khela, Pagla Ghora and Mudrarakshas. Some of the outstanding plays directed by him include Mrichhakatik, Gallileo and Rajdarshan. He has also acted in Shri Satyajit Ray’s film Teenkanya and Tapan Sinha’s Sagina Mahato. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Kumar Roy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting for 1983.
