Smt. Saraju Bala Devi was born in 1914 in Calcutta. She has been active in the field of theatre for nearly five decades. She started her acting career at the early age of 12 and later joined the professional theatre of Bengal. Her style in acting was shaped by such stalwarts of Bengali theatre as Surendra Nath Ghosh, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri, Nirmalendu Lahiri and Ahindra Chowdhury. Her style of acting is marked by deep emotional content. Her Jahanara in Shahjahan and many other roles are memorable in the history of Bengali theatre. There is a great range and variety in the roles that she has portrayed. She has also acted in the films and radio plays. She has been honoured by many cultural institutions. For her eminence in the field of theatre and her contribution to its enrichment Smt. Saraju Bala receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting.
