Sekhar Chatterjee

Born in 1924 in Calcutta, Shri Sekhar Chatterjee was initiated in theatre by Shri Utpal Dutt and later trained by Joan Littlewood at Theatre Workshop, London. Over a long career on the Bengali stage, Shri Sekhar Chatterjee has emerged as an outstanding actor and director. He has been especially acclaimed as an actor in the roles of Brecht’s Puntila, as Macduff and Iago in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Othello, and as Shardul Singh in Utpal Dutt’s Kallol. He has directed some 70 plays including Puntita, which attracted high critical acclaim at the seventh International Brecht Festival, Hongkong, in 1986. Shri Sekhar Chatterjee has also acted in films directed by Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and Richard Atten- borough, among others. His own film Vasundhara received a National Award at the 31st National Film Festival in Delhi in 1984. Shri Sekhar Chatterjee receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to theatre as an actor.
