I have the honour to present to you Shri Ahindra Choudhari, who is the recipient of the Akademi Award for Acting for the year 1958. Shri Ahindra Choudhari first appeared on the stage at a College function and continued to take part in amateur dramatic performances. As an amateur he took part in the formation of the Dramatic Society in Calcutta in 1918. In 1921 he organised a film company and produced a silent film "Soul of a Slave" in which he played the title role. He joined the professional stage in 1923 and since then with an unenviable zeal and devotion has been playing an important part in shaping and developing the Bengali stage. A foremost character actor he has appeared on the stage and screen in various roles and his immortal portrayals of different characters have won him wide popularity and distinction. He is the President of the Artists Association of Bengal and Dean of Faculty of Drama at the Academy of Dance, Drama and Music, West Bengal. For his pre-eminence in Acting and for his life long devotion and service to its cause, I pray, Sir, that you may be pleased to grant him recognition as Actor of the year and award to him a brocade Angvastram, a lotus embossed leaf in gold, and a Sanad in token of that recognition.
