Born in 1927 in Pune, Shri Yeshwant Balkrishna Joshi received his initial training in vocal music from Shri Mirashi- bua, one of the foremost disciples of Shri Balkrishnabua Ichalkaranjikar, the master of the Gwalior gharana. Later, he studied under Shri Jagannath- bua Purohit of the Agra gharana, popularly known as Gunidas. One of the foremost exponents of the music of the Gwalior and Agra gharanas, Shri Yeshwant Joshi has enriched Hindustani music by his own unique talents. Gifted with a resonant voice, he has a repertoire which is rich and diverse. In a career spanning five decades, Shri Joshi has performed in the country’s notable music conferences and has also participated in several seminars on music. He has trained many students in his long career, and continues to perform regularly on All India Radio and Doordarshan. Shri Joshi has brought out a number of audio-cassettes in India and overseas, and his music has been recorded for archival purposes by institutions including Sangeet Natak Akademi. For his service to music, Shri Yeshwant Joshi has received several honours including the Gaurav Samman conferred by the Government of Maharashtra in 1992-3. Shri Yeshwant Bua Joshi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
