Born in Cuttack in 1939, Shrimati Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi learnt Odissi dance at the Utkal Sangeet Samaj. Her teachers were Gurus Banbehari Maity, Singhari Shyam Sunder Kar, Pankaj Charan Das, Kelucharan Mohapatra and Debaprasad Das. She also trained in vocal music. From a performance in Delhi in 1954, Shrimati Priyambada Mohanty has played a pioneering role in the revival and recognition of Odissi as a distinct classical dance form unknown till then beyond its provenance. Thereafter she has performed all over India and given numerous lecture- demonstrations. She has also published extensively, acquiring authority in both Odissi theory and practice. A Professor of Zoology at Utkal University, she received a doctoral degree in the discipline from Michigan University in the United States. Among other honours, Shrimati Hejmadi received in 1980 the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. For her eminence in the field of dance and her contribution to its enrichment Shrimati Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Odissi for 1986.
