Sharayu Kalekar



Born in 1933 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Shrimati Sharayu Kalekar received her training in vocal music from Pandit Bhola Nath Bh and Acharya K.C.D. Brahaspati of the Rampur Sadarang gharana. A vocalist of renown, Shrimati Kalekar has a large repertoire of Dhrnpad, Khayal Thumri, Dadra, and Tappa composi- tions many of them in rare ragas. A distinguished teacher of music, she has held senior positions in a number of music institutions and colleges and has trained many students over the years. She retired as Vice- Chancellor of the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidayalaya, Khairagarh, in 1994. Shrimati Kalekar has perfor- med on All India Radio for more than three decades and has a number of publications to her credit. She has been honoured by several institutions, receiving the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996. Shrimati Sharayu Kalekar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribu- tion to Hindustani vocal music.
