Born in 1948 in Panikula village, Orissa, Shri Gangadhar Pradhan was trained in the Gotipua’s art by Banchhanidhi Pradhan, Chandra Shekhar Pattnaik, and Madadev Rout.Later, he went through the Nrutyacharya course in Odissi dance at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar, under the guidance of Pankaj Chaffin Das, Deba Prasad Das, Minati Mishra and Dhirendra Nath Pattanaik. With a scholarship from the Government of India, he received further training under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.He was also trained in Mardala by Singhari Shyama Sunder Kar and Banamali Maharana. In the past twenty-five years, Shri Gangadhar Pradhan has made a contribution to Odissi dance as a teacher. He set up the Orissa Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar in 1972 where he has trained a number of dancers who are now established in the field. He subsequently set up the Konark Natya Mandap and several other institutions for training and propagation of Orissa’s dance and music traditions. He has also excelled as a choreogra- pher. An excellent Mardala artist, Shri Gangadhar Pradhan often accompanied the late Sanjukta Panigrahi in her recitals. He has also shown leadership in organizing festivals of arts and has presented his disciples in many major events. He was honoured with the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1993. Shri Gangadhar Pradhan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contri- bution to Odissi dance.
