Born in 1953 in Shyam Nagar, West Bengal, Shri Ajoy Chakra- barty received his training in vocal music from his father Ajit Kumar Chakrabarty, Munawwar Ali Khan of the Patiala gharana, and Jnan Prakash Ghosh; the latter also taught him the harmonium and Tabla, and light classical music. He received his Master’s degree in music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.
An outstanding vocalist, Ajoy Chakrabarty has performed widely in India and abroad. His style is marked by virtuosity and a chaste classicism. He is also well known for rendering devotional and semi-classical music. A prolific singer and composer, he has to his credit a large number of popular cassettes and compact discs. He has authored books on music, and imparts training to a large number of promising students at his institution, Shrutinandan, in Kolkata.
Ajoy Chakrabarty has been honoured by the Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata. He has also received the President’s Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1989, the Kumar Gandharva Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1993, and the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award in 1995 and 2000.
Shri Ajoy Chakrabarty recei- ves the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
