Puttaraj Gavaigalu

Born in 1914 in Devagiri, Karnataka, Shri Puttaraj Gavaigalu received his initial training in Hindustani vocal music under Shri Panchakshara Gavaigalu of the Gwalior gharana. Shri Gavaigalu is a senior exponent of Hindustani music and is equally at home in Carnatic music. He heads the Shri Veereshwar Punyashrama which runs educational and arts institutions for blind and orphaned children. He is respected as a teacher and has trained many students of music. He has published books on music and other subjects and has received a number of titles and honours for his work. These include an honorary doctorate from Karnataka University, Dharwad (1975); the K.S.A. Pra- shasti from Karnataka Sangeeta Academy; the Music and Drama Award of the Karnataka State Nataka Academy (1990); the Sangeeta Vidwan title from the Government of Karnataka (1993); an Emeritus Fellowship from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India (1996); and the Kanaka Purandhara Prashasti from the Government of Karnataka (1998). Shri Puttaraj Gavaigalu receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Hindustani vocal music.
