Born on 7 November 1937 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Shrimati Sulochana Brahaspati learnt vocal music from Pandit Bholanath Bhatt and Ustad Mushtaq Hussein Khan of Rampur. She later received intensive training from her guru, and later her husband, Acharya K.C.D. Brahaspati. A large number of his compositions — Khayals, Thumris, Tappas and Dadras — are a part of Shrimati Brahaspati’s repertoire. Shrimati Brahaspati’s render- ings are distinguished by the richness of her voice and the intricacies of her taans. Shrimati Brahaspati is also an accomp- lished teacher and musicologist, and has published books including Raga-rahasya and Khusro, Tansen, tatha anya Kalakar. Among other honours, she received the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1984. Shrimati Sulochana Brahas- pati receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contri- bution to Hindustani vocal music.
