Bala Saheb Poochwale



Born in 1918 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Shri Balasaheb Poochwale received his training in Hindustani vocal music from his father Shri Rajabhaiyya Poochwale of the Gwalior gharana. He was also trained by Pandit V.N. Bhatkhande and Shri S.N. Ratanjankar. Over the past several decades he has distinguished himself as an outstanding exponent of the Gwalior gharana. Principal of Madhav Music College, Gwalior, from 1964 till his retirement, Shri Balasaheb Poochwale has made vital con- tributions as a teacher. Among his many students are well- known vocalists including Shrimati Malini Rajurkar and Shri Romesh Nadkarni. Shri Poochwale’s large repertoire of Khayals and Tappas have been recorded by several archives of music in India and abroad. Shri Balasaheb Poochwale has received a number of awards and honours including the Shikhar Samman of the Govern- ment of Madhya Pradesh. Shri Balasaheb Poochwale receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
