Born in 1909 in Mysore, Shri Ramarao Venkajirao Naik studied vocal music with Sarvashri Srinivasa Roo, G.V. ehave, Ata Hussein Khan and Faiyyaz Khan of the Agra-Atrauli gharanas. Apart from a distinguished career on the concert platform spanning several decades, he has taught a number of eminent musicians, among whom figure Dr M.R. Gautam, Shrimati Lalit J. Rao and Shrimati Lalita Ubhayakar. A number of his Khayal compositions are rendered by practising musicians today. Shri Naik was honoured by the Government of Karnataka in 1985 and received the Tansen Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1992. Shri Ramarao V. Naik receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
