Born in 1910 Sri Kartik Ram initially learnt folk dances of the Chhatisgarh region from his father Kunj Ram and his uncle Mohan Lal. Impressed with his dancing, Maharaja Chakradhar Singh of Rampur brought him to his Court to be trained in Kathak. Sri Kartik Ram has also studied with Pt. Sivanarayan of Jaipur. Later he was groomed by eminent Kathak gurus such as Narayan Prasad, Sunder Lal, Acchhan Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj. He is thus steeped in both the Jaipur and Lucknow gharanas. He is also a gifted teacher and has trained many disciples. At present he is director of the Chakradhar Nritya Kendra, Bhopal. He was honoured with an Award by the Madhya Pradesh Government in 1981. For his eminence in the field of dancing and his contribution to its enrichment Sri Kartik Ram receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Kathak for 1982.
