Born in 1926 in Pune, Shrimati Manik Varma learnt Hindustani music from Shri Sureshbabu Mane, Ustad Inayat Khan, Pandit Bhola Nath Bhatt and Jagan- nathbua Purohit of the Kirana and Agra Gharanas. Assimilat- ing the best in both Gharanas, she emerged as a vocalist of distinction, performing widely over a long career. Apart from Khayal, Shrimati Varma excels in Thumri and other forms of light classical music, Marathi Bhavageet in particular. Classical music aside, Shrimati Manik Varma has been a popular singer in Marathi films. She has some three hundred gramophone records to her credit — classical and light classical. Shrimati Varma received the Padma Shri in 1974. For her eminence in the field of music and her contribution to its enrichment Shrimati Manik Amar Varma receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1986.
