I present to you, Sir, Smt. Kumbakonam K. Bhanumathi. Born in 1922 in Kumbakonam and in a family of hereditary dancers, Smt. Bhanumathi received training in Bharata Natyam from Papanasam Vadivelu Nattuvanar. In the early days of the dance revival, Smt. Bhanumathi was a leading and a very popular Bharata Natyam artiste. For over 25 years she danced in many parts of the country, including the Princely States, and also in Ceylon. In 1937 she appeared as the heroine in Jalaja, a Tamil film on the Bharata Natyam theme. Smt. Bhanumathi has baen honoured by various cultural bodies, including the Tamil Nadu Sangita Nataka Sangam. For her eminence in the field of Dance and her contribution to its enrichment, Smt. Kumba- konam Bhanumathi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharata Natyam.
