Born in 1918 in Tikamgarh, Shrimati Asgari Bai learnt Hindu- stani vocal music initially from her mother Nazir Begum, later from Ustad Zahoor Khan Saheb of Gohad. She was a musician in the court of Orchha in Madhya Pradesh for several years. In a career spanning four decades, Shrimati Asgari Bai emerged as one of the few women exponents of Dhrupad and is reckoned today among our finest Hindustani vocalists. She has performed in Dhrupad festivals all over the country. For her achievement in music, Shrimati Asgari Bai has been honoured by the Government of Madhya Pradesh with the Shikhar Samman in 1984 and the Tansen Samman in 1985. For her eminence in the field of music and her contribution to its enrichment Shrimati Asgari Bai receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1986.
