I present to you, Sir, Shrimati Swarnasaraswathi, who receives this year's Akademi Award for Bharata Natyam. She comes from a distinguished family of dancers and musicians. Shrimati Swarnasaraswathi received her training from such eminent gurus as Kanchipuram Thiruvengadu Nattuvanar, Mylapore Gauri Ammal and Visiri Chinnaya Naidu. An exponent of rare quality, she has taught Bharata Natyam for several years and was the Principal of Bharatha Natya Academy in Madras. Her interest in teaching has led to establishing a centre now in New Delhi. An artist of high eminence she has taken her art not only to many parts of India but also to the continent of Europe, where her demonstrations received great appreciation along with understanding. Held in high esteem, Shrimati Swarnasaraswathi has received several titles and honours from learned institutions and sabhas in the South. The Sangeet Natak Akademi has much pleasure in giving her the Award in Bharata Natyam in appreciation of her art and her successful efforts at propagating it through her pupils.
