Born in 1942 in Palani, Tamil Nadu, Shrimati Krishnaveni Lakshmanan studied dance with Shrimati Rukmini Devi Arundale, Shrimati Mylapore Gowri Ammal, Shri Asan Chandu Panikkar and Shri Melattur Balu Bhagavathar. A student of Kalakshetra, Madras, she specialized in the Pandanallur Bharatanatyam tradition, receiving her post-graduate diploma in 1962. Shrimati Lakshmanan has since acquired renown as an exponent of Bharatanatyam, her dance marked by lively Nritta and creative Abhinaya. She has played many roles in Kalakshe- tra dance-dramas, excelling as Sita and Andal in particular. With the Kalakshetra group and as a solo dancer she has performed widely at home and abroad. Among honours received by Shrimati Lakshmanan are Nritya Choodamani conferred by the Krishna Gana Sabha in 1976 and the Unesco medal in 1984. For her eminence in the field of dance and her contribution to its enrichment Shrimati Krishnaveni Lakshmanan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharata- natyam for 1986.
