Sudharani Raghupathy



Born in 1944, Smt. Sudharani Raghupathy learnt Bharatanat- yam from the eminent teachers, Prof. U.S. Krishna Rao, Shri Kittappa Pillai, Shri Muthiah Pillai and Smt. Mylapore Gowri Amma. She studied music with Shri T. Chowdiah and Shri Madurai Krishnan. She also underwent training in the Martha Graham technique of modern dance in the U.S.A. Smt. Sudharani Raghupathy has peformed widely in India and abroad since her Arange- tram in 1954. She had the honour to perform at the UNO on the Human Rights Day in 1981. She has published several papers on dance and related subjects and has participated in national and international seminars. She has established an institute in Madras where systematic training is imparted in Bharatanatyam. She has also experimented with dance as a therapeutic treatment for minor physical deformities in children. She is the recipient of several awards and honours including the Kalaimamani from the Tamilnadu Eyal lsai Nataka Manram in 1981. For her eminence in the field of Dance and her contribution to its enrichment, Smt. Sudha- rani Raghupathy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharatanatyam for 1984.
