Mahadev Prasad Mishra

Shri Mahadev Prasad Mishra was born in 1907 in Allahabad. He received his initial training in music at a very early age from his grand-father, Shri Ramesh- war Prasad, and gained proficiency in several forms of Hindustani music, specialising in such forms as Thumri, Tappa and Chaiti. Later, he also received extensive training in Tabla for many years. Shri Mahadev Prasad Mishra is considered today the doyen of the Purab Ang style of light classical music. He has been honoured by the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi and Bhatkhande Sangit Samiti. Wherever he has performed he has held his audiences spell-bound with his inimitable style of rendering classical and light classical forms of music. Shri Mishra has also trained several reputed musicians, among them being Smt. N. Rajam, Shri Anantlal, Smt. Laxmi Shankar besides others. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Mahadev Prasad Mishra receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1983.
