I present to you, Madam, Shri Basavaraj Rajguru. Born in 1920 Basavaraj Rajguru received initial training from his father Mahanta Swami Rajguru. Later he studied with old masters such as Panch- akshari Buva, Savai Gandharva and Suresh Babu Mane. Assimilating distinctive elements of Kirana, Gwalior and other gharanas he has developed a style which is at once rigorous and free. When he was still in his teens he gave an impressive recital during Vijaya Nagar Comme- morative Celebrations held in Hampi in 1936 which earned laurels from even the most fastidious connoisseur of music. Sri Basavaraj Rajguru has been honoured by many dis- tinguished cultural institutions. He was the recipient of Padmasree in 1975. He is at present Honorary Professor of Music in Karnataka University, Dharwar. He has given innumer- able recitals all over the country. He has several discs to his credit and has been featured several times in the National Programme of Music of All India Radio. He is a gifted teacher and has trained many students of whom some are now recognized musicians. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Sri Basavaraj Rajguru receives Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1981.
