Born in 1914 in Barisal in East Bengal, Shri Anil Biswas was a professional singer at seventeen. In 1934 he embarked upon a career in films, composing music for a hundred features by 1963. Among these are Vatan (1938), Ek hi Rasta, Ali Baba (1940), Roti (1942), and Pardesi (1957) — an Indo-Soviet venture. Shri Anil Biswas joined All India Radio in 1963, serving first as Director of its National Orchestra, then as a Chief Producer of Music. In orchestral experiments with Indian instru- ments his contribution is signifi- cant, as also in music for dance- drama. Shri Biswas is a known singer of Thumri and Ghazal, and Padavali Kirtan of Bengal. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Anil Biswas receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Creative and Experimental Music for 1986.
