Born in 1932 in the village of Tripunithura, Kerala, Shri Tripunithura Viswanatha Gopalkrishnan received his initial training in Mridangam and vocal music from his father Shri T. G. Viswanatha Bhagavathar and from Shri Palghat Subba Iyer. Later, he received intensive training in vocal music from Shri Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhaga- vathar. Over the years Shri T. V. Gopalkrishnan has acquired a distinct style as a Mridangam- player. He has accompanied many leading Carnatic musi- cians and has been associated with outstanding Hindustani musicians as well. Shri T. V. Gopalkrishnan is the author of many compositions for percussion instruments and has issued a large number of gramophone records and cassettes. He has participated in festivals, workshops and lecture-demonstrations in many countries. Among other honours, Shri T. V. Gopal- krishnan received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1985. Shri T. V. Gopalkrishnan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Carnatic instrumental music.
