Born in 1907 in the village of Rudrapattana, Karnataka, Shri Rudrapattana Krishnasasuy Venkatrama Sastry studied violin with Shri R. Venkata Rao, Shri R.K. Krishna Sasuy, Shri B. Subbanna, and the noted vidwan Shri T. Chowdiah. He also learnt Carnatic vocal music. Shri R.K. Venkatrama Sasuy has had a long career as a violinist and has accompanied many eminent Carnatic vocalists: Shri Tiger Varada- chariar, Shri Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Shri Maharajapuram Vishwanatha Iyer, Shri Musiri Subramania Iyer, Shri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Shrimati M.S. Subbulakshmi, etc. He also accompanied his mentor Shri T. Chowdiah in the latter’s solo recitals. Shri Venkatrama Sastry was a violinist on the staff of Akashvani for 32 years. Among other honours, he received the title of Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram in 1970, Shri R.K. Venkatrama Sastry receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Carnatic instrumental music.
