Chitti Babu

Born in 1936 in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, Shri Challa- pally Chitti Babu received his initial training in Veena from Shri E. Appalacharyulu and was later a student of Shri Emani Sankara Sastry. Shri Chitti Babu began his career as a concert artiste while still young and established himself as a leading Veena player. He has performed widely all over India and has success- fully toured the United States, Germany, and the Soviet Union. He has a large number of gramophone records and cassettes to his credit. Among other honours, Shri Chitti Babu received the title of Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1973. The Tamil Nadu Government has also appoint- ed him a State Artiste. Shri Chitti Babu is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the Andhra University. Shri Chitti Babu receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
