D. K. Jayaram

Shri D. K. Jayaraman was born in 1928 in a family of musicians. From his very childhood he was trained by his sister, the eminent vocalist, Smt. D. K. Pattammal. Shri D. K. Jayaraman, who belongs to the Kanchipuram Nayana Pillai School, has earned a reputation for rendering the compositions of Saint Thyagaraja, Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar and Sri Syama Sastry in particular. He has evolved a delightfully creative and original style of his own. He has given a large number of performances within the country and abroad. He has won many honours and titles including the title of Kalaimamani from the Govern-ment of Tamil Nadu.
For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri D. K. Jayaraman receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Carnatic Vocal Music for 1983.
