Born in 1922 in Patharakkudi, Shri B. Rajam Iyer learnt Carnatic vocal music from Shri Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar. Later, as a student of Shri T.L. Venkatararna Iyer, he gathered a large repertoire of Muthu- swami Deekshithar Kritis. A scholar of repute, Shri B. Rajam Iyer has published several books including a translation of Sangita Sampra- dayini — a commentary on Muthuswami Deekshithar’s work. Formerly Professor in the Government College of Carnatic Music, he is now Principal, Teachers’ College of Music, Madras. For his varied services to Carnatic music, Shri Rajam Iyer received in 1981 the title of Kalaimamani conferred by the Government of Tamil Nadu. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri B. Rajam Iyer receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Carnatic Vocal Music for 1986.
