Maharajapuram V. Santhanam

Shri Maharajapuram Santha- nam was born in 1928 at Kumbakonam in Tanjore District of Tamilnadu and is the son and disciple of the illustrious musician, Shri Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer. He comes sixth in the direct sishya parampara of the Saint Thyagaraja. Steeped in classical traditions, Shri Santhanam received training from a very young age and has evolved a distinct style of his own, which is marked by rich musical imagination and syste- matic eleboration of ragas. Gifted with a mellifluous voice, he has cultivated a vast and varied song repertoire of Carna- tic music. He has been extremely popular as a concert artiste and has widely performed within the country and abroad. He has served as the Principal of Ramanatha University of Music in Sri Lanka for over five years. He has been awarded the title of Kalaimamani by the Tamilnadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram and has been honoured as a State artiste by the Government of Tamilnadu. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Maharaja- puram Santhanam receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Camatic Vocal Music for 1984.
