Anant Lal



Born in 1927 in Varanasi in a family of traditional musicians, Shri Anant Lal leamt Shehnai from his father Pandit Mithai Lal. He was later a student of the eminent vocalist Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra of Varanasi. Besides the Shehnai, he also plays the flute. Establishing himself early as a Shehnai player of repute, Shri Anant Lal served Akashvani as a staff artiste for many years.He has performed widely all over the country, as well as in Europe, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Among his students are several well known Shehnai and flute players of the younger generation, including his son Daya Shankar. Shri Anant Lal receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
