I present to you, Madam, Shri Vishnu Govind Jog. Born in 1922, Shri Vishnu Govind Jog had his early training under the gurus Shankar Rao Athavale, Ganpat Rao Purohit and V. Shastry. Later he received extensive training from Dr. S. N. Ratanjankar and Ustad Allauddin Khan. Shri Jog has evolved his own style which is a blending of Gayaki and Gatkari and is noted for the purity of rendition and the ease with which he communicates the idioms of music. Groomed in Gwalior, Agra and Bakhle gharanas Shri Jog’s recitals are known for their dignity and crispness of svara and tala. He has received many honours from various cultural institutions among them being ‘Vadya Nipuna’ from Bhat- khande University of Music, Lucknow, in 1944; ‘Violin Samrat’ from Indian Music Circle, Vassar, U.S.A. in 1973; ‘Tantri Vilas’ from Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelan, Bombay, in 1978 and ‘Behala Samrat’ from Lalit Kala Pitha, Bhubaneswar, Orissa in 1980. He was professor of Instrumental Music in Bhatkhande University of Music, Lucknow till 1952; later he joined All India Radio as Music Producer, and was finally Deputy Chief Music Producer, Delhi. He has accompanied great musicians like Ustad Fayaz Khan, Onkar Nath Thakur, Kesar Bai, and Bade Gulam Ali Khan, and has played memorable duets with maestros like Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Bismillah Khan, Gyanprakash Ghosh and in Karnatak music with Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu and Mysore T. Chowdiah. He has toured extensively throughout the country and abroad, and has trained many disciples. He is closely associated with various Universities of the country and was Visiting Professor of the Ali Akbar College of Music in Berkeley (U.S.A.). At present he is attached to Sangeet Research Academy, Calcutta. He has published a taxt book ‘Behala Shiksha’ for students of Violin. He has to his credit many disc recordings. For his eminence in the art of Violin playing and his contribution to the enrichment of music, Shri Vishnu Govind Jog received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Instrumental Music.
