Born in 1937 in Shillong, Meghalaya, Shrimati Sisir Kana Dhar Chowdhury received her training in instrumental music from Pandit V.G. Jog and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan of the Maihar Senia gharana. Besides the violin, she learnt to play the viola and also trained in vocal music. Shrimati Sisir Kana Dhar Chowdhury has enjoyed a career of over thirty years as a Violinist. She is now dedicated to the teaching of music. Among other institutions, she has taught briefly at the Ali Akbar College of Music in the United States. She has issued several cass- ettes of her music and has numerous radio performances to her credit. Shrimati Sisir Kana Dhar Chowdhury receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Hindu- stani instrumental music.
