N. Rajam

Born in 1939 in Ernakulam, Kerala, Shrimati N. Rajam received her training in violin from her father Shri A. Narayana Iyer. She later studied Hindu- stani music under Pandit Omkarnath Thakur of the Gwalior gharana. An outstanding soloist, Shrimati N. Rajam has performed widely in India and abroad. Her style is marked by virtuosity and chaste classicism. She has also specialized in playing in the thumri style of Banaras, benefiting by her training under Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra. A regular broadcaster, Shrimati N. Rajam has a large number of gramo- phone records and cassettes to her credit. She has taught at Banaras Hindu University from 1959 and is presently Dean of its Faculty of Performing Arts. Among other honours, Shrimati N. Rajam received the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1976 and the Padma Shri in 1984. She is now Chairperson of the Uttar Pra- desh Sangeet Natak Akademi. Shrimati N. Rajam receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
