Born on 11 December 1937 in Calcutta, Shri Mohan Chandrasekaran received his initial training in
Carnatic violin from his mother Charubala Mohan, and was later groomed by several eminent
musicians including Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhagavathar, T. Jayammal, and Narsimhulu Naidu.
An exceptionally accomplished musician, Shri Chandrasekaran has received wide acclaim for his performances on the concert platform spanning a period of over sixty years. Besides solo performances, he has accompanied leading musicians on the violin. He is the founder-President of the Charubala Mohan Trust of Chennai, an organization for the promotion of Carnatic music. He has participated in workshops on Carnatic music organized by various institutions in India and abroad. These events have focused on different styles in the violinist's art, and have also dealt with Padams, Javalis, and their related ragas. He has a large number of recordings to his credit.
For his service to music, Shri Chandrasekaran has been conferred many prestigious titles and awards. They include the title Kalaimamani bestowed by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram (1982), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1986), the Sangita Kalanidhi title bestowed by the Music Academy, Madras (2005), the Sangita Ratnakara title given by the Sri Tyagaraja Swamy Aradhana Committee, USA (2007), and an honorary D.Litt. conferred by the University of Karnataka (2011).
Shri Mohan Chandrasekaran is elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian music.
