Balwant Rai Bhatt



Born in 1921 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, Shri Balwant Rai Bhatt received his training in music from Shri Omkarnath Thakur of the Gwalior gharana. He has had a successful career on the concert platform as a singer, and has performed widely in India and other countries. A prolific composer, he has published well over a thousand Khayals, Taranas, Chaturangas, and Dhrupads under the pen name ‘Bhavrang’. For a number of years, he has taught at the Faculty of Performing Arts, Benares Hindu University. Shri Bhatt is also an accomplished player of the Tabla, Jaltarang and Israj. A distinguished teacher, he has lectured widely in universities and other institutions in the country and abroad; his music has been recorded for the World Music Teaching Scheme of the University of Penn- sylvania, U.S.A. For his service to music, he has been honoured with the awards of the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi and Gujarat Rajya Sangeet Nritya Natya Academy. He received the Fellowship of Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1998 and the Padma Shri in 1990. Shri Balwant Rai Bhatt receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Hindustani vocal music.
