Born in 1940 in Lucknow, Shrimati Rita Ganguly received her training in vocal music from Gopeshwar Banerjee, Sham- bhu Maharaj, Siddheshwari Devi, Begum Akhtar, Mani Prasad, and Yunus Hussain Khan.
Endowed with a rich voice, she has evolved a distinct style of rendering Ghazal and Thumri, and is known as one of the foremost performers of the light classical forms of Hindustani music. She has also learnt Khyal-singing. She has trained in Kathakali, Kathak, Manipuri, Bharatanatyam and modern dance under eminent teachers. Rita Ganguly has been teaching movement and mime as a Professor at the National School of Drama in Delhi for over three decades and has made a notable contribution to theatre. She has also research- ed on India’s musical and theatrical traditions.
Rita Ganguly has been honoured by several institu- tions. She is a recipient of the award of the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi. Shrimati Rita Ganguly recei- ves the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
