Born in 1930 in Lucknow, Shrimati Malabika Kanan received her training in vocal music from her father Rabindra Lal Roy and her husband A. Kanan of the Gwalior and Kirana gharanas. She had an early start as a concert artist and has performed widely in India and abroad. Gifted with a rich voice, she is among the best-known Hindustani vocalists today. She has also trained a number of students as a senior guru at the Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta since 1979. She is also known for her devotional music, and has several popular records and cassettes to her credit. Shrimati Malabika Kanan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribu- tion to Hindustani vocal music.
