I present to you, Shri
Bhargavram Vitthal Warerkar,
who has been in the forefront of
the field of dramatic art in the
past few decades.
Born in 1883 in Maharashtra, Shri Bhargavram Vitthal, affectionately known as ‘Mama’ Warerkar, commenced his literary career early in life. His writings have been varied in subject and literary form. But it is as a playwright that he has exerted profound influence on the Marathi stage, and deservedly won the Akademi Award in 1958 in this field. His published works include fortyseven plays, apart from a large number of novels, short stories and essays.
‘Mama’ Warerkar has founded many well-known literary and dramatic organisations in the country and has been honoured by many. Because of his learning and distinguished service to the art of the theatre in which he has reached eminence and outstanding leadership, ‘Mama’ Warerkar has been elected a Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
